INTRODUCTION

Chamomila Recutita (Family: Astreraceae ) is a native to Europe and temperate Asia and is introduced in temperature regions of India for cultivation. It often grows near roads, around landfills and in cultivated fields as a weed, because the seeds require open soil to survive. It is small herbaceous annual plant growing to a height of 60-90 cm. its flowers are in demand in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries that led to great interest in cultivation of this plant to produce sufficient quantity of raw material for bridging the gap between demand and supply.

APPLICATIONS

Chamomile flower are used as such in many medicinal preparations such as chamomile tea, shampoos and toiletries, etc. It is also prescribed in debility, flatulence, colic, hysteria and intermittent fevers. A warm and strong infusion acts as mild tonic and febrifuge. The essential oil possess anti-bacterial and fugicidal properties. Ethanolic extract of chamomile is known to inhibit the growth of polio virus and shows anti-heptic effect.
